Board Meeting Minutes April 12, 2010

The Board of Education of Community Unit School District #202, Knox County, met in a special meeting duly called and held April 12, 2010 at 6:35 p.m. at Knoxville High School Home Economics Room, 600 E. Main Street, Knoxville, Illinois, which is within the boundaries of said District. The President called the meeting to order and directed that the roll be called. Upon the roll being called, the following members answered and were found present:

Mr. Bogard, Mr. Byom, Mr. Callahan, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Putnam, Mr. Rickard

And the following were absent: Mr. Trulson

Also present were: Mr. Carlton, Mr. Wilder, Randy Bryan, Larry Clevenger, Shayne Aldridge, community members, Mr. Eastin, George Jones, faculty/staff, media.

Mr. Carlton commented that the District received Financial Recognition again by the State. We are graded on a 4.0 scale and our District received a 3.90 for the 08-09 school year.

Proposed Reductions-Discussion Only

Notes:

*Current year budget discussion

*retiring teachers/hiring replacements

*pre-school

*Board Conference/Board Travel

*Title I-retiring-not to replace

*JH Library Aide-have aides/students cover library on an as need basis

*JH Science Teacher-combine science classes and do not hire replacement teacher

*Cook-MWES-do not replace-use existing cooks to cover hours

*Breakfast Program-eliminate or just have cold breakfasts

*increase lunch prices

*need JH Dishwasher-$16,000.00

*need new deep freezer-$4,300.00

*raise milk prices

*use aides/volunteer parents to serve lunches

*prepare to fund preschool in case state funding isn't there

*move pre school to MWES

*hold off on selling building for a couple years in case enrollment continues to climb and we need to move pre school back

*pre school bussing-town kids PM and bus kids AM

*only have AM pre school

*HS Secretary-eliminate 2nd position

*Building Budgets-cut by 25%

*cut all teacher conference/workshops

*have speakers come to school (for CPDUs)

*offer more CPDUs at school for teachers

*eliminate freshman sports-all freshman sports across the board

*eliminate some assistant coach positions

*eliminate travel supervision at away games

*eliminate GAVC classes

*no new busses unless monies from State begins to come in

*technology hardware-decrease by half

*textbooks-only get $20,000 for each building

*no conference/mileage reim/food reim-eliminate completely

*classroom aides-eliminate, bring some back if monies come in

*Improvement of Instruction-eliminate?

*Band Uniforms-eliminate until dollars are there

*Principal travel/workshops-decrease

*Principal supplies-decrease

*food supplies-decrease ?

*close lunches-no open lunches for students

*Residential Tuition Special Ed kids-don't pay for some of their expenses

*Custodians-no subs during custodial vacatioins

*Custodians-close July-2 weeks no pay 2 weeks vacation

*Custodians-subs-don't call in subs if custodian is sick for one day

*reduce 2 part time custodians and move current custodians around to cover all areas

*new desks for MWES 10-11 school year

*parking lot tar/chip-only do half in 10-11 or none at all

*parking at JH-gravel area for additional parking for games

*eliminate signs in front of JH for parking-speak with Mayor about this

*Building Purchase Services-reduce by $15K

*Building Supplies-reduce by $20K

*Building Capitol Outlay-reduce by $20K

*Transportation Parts/Supplies-reduce by $5k

*Transportation gasoline-reduce by $20K

*combine bus routes to save money and salaries

*what amount do we want to try to decrease for 10-11?

*1% sales tax increase for Knox County schools

*sell yellow truck

*sell district car

*sell pre school

*parking permits-charge students to park-would pay for tar/chipping

*tech fee-charge students for being able to use computers/printers

*increase athletic season passes prices

*increase registration fees

*make registration fees one set rate to all buildings

*don't allow students to be in classes they owe money in, transfer to gym class or another class so there won't be overcrowding

*eliminate Behind the Wheel when we are able to 

*allow some people to volunteer to do work/projects around the schools to save money

*set goals for the district

*cut extra this year so that next year we don't have to cut as much

There being no further business to come before the Board, it was moved by Member Putnam and seconded by Member Rickard that the meeting be adjourned. The President put the question to the Board and the motion unanimously carried and the meeting was so adjourned at 9:52 p.m.

Roll call vote was as follows:

Aye: Mr. Bogard, Mr. Byom, Mr. Callahan, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Putnam, Mr. Rickard

Nay: None

Whereupon the President declared the motion carried.
