Congratulations Literature Listeners Grant Winners!

by Christina Henry

January 22, 2010

The principal of Knoxville High School, Mr. Mike Kemmer, is shown receiving a check from Alpha Rho members Kathy Davis and Janice Johnson. In a joint effort the teachers received funding for the Literature Listeners project through the Lambda State Foundation for Educational Studies Stipend. After working many years with special needs students with reading delays, Kathy and Janice were looking for ways to transfer high school textbooks as well as other reading books into auditory books. It was felt that students who could hear the text read while following along in their books would help to improve reading scores, reading fluency, and build reading confidence of not only the special education students, but also to other students who would use this service. The check sent from delta Kappa Gamma International state chapter, Lambda State, in Illinois for $1,795.00 would cover the cost of five Plextalk Pocket  Players. One will be for each grade level in which English textbooks as well as novels will be downloaded and checked out by students. In the letter sent to Janice and Kathy announcing the monetary award from Lambda State it was noted that "the project was an excellent one that should certainly benefit the students in your school who need this special reading help. We were impressed with the planning that the two of you have done and with your concern for students who so desperately need help in order to understand necessary text material."

Both Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Johnson will be recognized at the 2010 Lambda State Convention in Springfield in April.
